Self Portrait James Gorman was born in Gourock, Scotland He studied mural painting at the Glasgow School of Art and these mural painting talents were put into action in Trinity College, Glasgow, The Alliance Building Society, in Ayr and Moorcroft Primary School,Gourock.. His original artistic influence came from his grandfather and other influences come from Edward Burra,Picassoand Stanley Spencer and his landscapes are influenced by Turner,Gillies,Cotman and contemporary artist Lucian Freud. James Gorman has a wonderful variety of skills in his armoury from his contorted figures intertwined with strange beasts and animals.....along with his passionate representations of his island of Arran He arrived on Arran via Glasgow, Greenock and Gourock .....he says he just slipped down the Clyde. He has exhibited widely including in `64 when he showed with the Glasgow Group,in `78 in the Woodstock Gallery in London and again in `79 in the Chande Gallery, `80 in Edinburgh and in `88 in Glasgow in 90`s Gallery. This exhibition began a long association with this gallery. He was in the Connections exhibition in the Glasgow School of Art along with some of our other Keeper artists. `96 saw his first solo in the John D.Kelly, Glasgow and in`98 was in the Past and Present exhibition along side some of the most famous Scottish artists of the past two hundred years including Charles Rennie MacKintosh, Sir David Murray and Jack Knox. James has travelled to China and Central Asia and was much influenced by the many domes and mosaics in the mosques he saw. He has also painted in Paris.
