Ink and watercolour by Mike Shepley AILSA CRAIG – Creag Ealasaid The volcanic plug of an ancient volcano, this spectacular island in the outer Firth of Clyde off the Ayrshire coast is famous for its granite known as ailsite, which has made the finest curling stones since the middle of the 19th century. Blue hone granite is used for the running edge and the common green granite for the main body of the stone. William Kay established his curling stone business in 1851 and the small family company continues to use Ailsa Craig granite to this day. Rather than a modern 40 lb curling stone, I used an older reference for my ‘reflection’ of the craig itself.
Ink and watecolour by Mike Shepley The Old Brig over the River Doon Or like the snow falls in the river, A moment white--then melts for ever… Now, do thy speedy utmost, Meg, And win the key-stane o' the brig; There at them thou thy tail may toss, A running stream they dare na cross. But ere the key-stane she could make, The fient a tail she had to shake! The Old Brig over the River Doon still stands where it did, when Burns’ Tam O’Shanter on his faithful mare Meg, crossed the bridge to safety. Burn’s beautiful words and a summer photograph of the bridge and woodlands, were the inspiration for this painting - donated to Hansel Foundation. Top | Site Map # ss09/005 |
